CNM STEMulus Pop-Up Pavillion
Central New Mexico College (CNM) • Educational / Institutional • Albuquerque, NM • 2014
Impermanently positioned on the street level roof plaza of the Harry Weese-designed First National Bank Building (1975), the off-grid sun-powered PopUp Pavilion for CNM's rapid-start STEMulus Center is intended to engage downtown pedestrians along 2nd street.
As part of Albuquerque's developing downtown innovation district, the pavilion promotes CNM's social and entrepreneurial energy and its new programs in the Weese building. Mobile, economical and flexible, the pavilion is made from three pre-fitted shipping containers finished off-site, then craned-in and snapped together using cargo locks. Assembled to define a small shaded courtyard within the larger plaza and positioned with as much solar exposure as possible (to maximize photovoltaic harvesting), the composition aligns with the existing breezeway at the NW corner.
With bold graphics, 4KW PV array and sculptural massing, its billboard and patio character has become an instant downtown social and visual magnet.
