Wilway Addition

Private Renovation / Addition Albuquerque, NM 2012

The Wilway Addition consists of two separate additions totaling 530 sf, to an existing 1950’s home in a typical post-WWII Albuquerque neighborhood. An 8’ wide addition to the Living Room creates a secondary sitting and fireplace area. A 15’ wide addition on the east side creates space for a new Kitchen, Dining and re-organized Entry.

The social space of the house is reorganized around a room-sized operable skylight / light well (15’ x 15’ ) that runs the entire length of the new Kitchen. The skylight brings additional east light down to a flush glazed clerestory at the Master Bedroom and naturally ventilates the house. A redwood and black iron steel trellis continues inside the house from a new Patio / Garden.

A fully operable glass wall makes the Patio / Garden a natural extension of the Kitchen. The original coved ceiling details are continued into the new Living Room and the original oak floor extends into the new Kitchen, integrating new with old.
